Scholastic Writing Awards
Though competition is by no means the only measuring stick we use at Writopia Lab, a lot of our students do enjoy entering their pieces in this contest, the most prestegious and oldest-standing writing competition for teens in the US. For the last three years, more kids from Writopia Lab have won at both the regional and national levels than from any other school in the nation!

Next Steps

Visit the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers to see registration and submission guidelines. Encourage your students to submit!

The deadline for our region is January 7, 2011.

We will hold a Regional Award Ceremony this spring (date TBA) to recognize both outstanding DC-area writers and their teachers!

Thank you again for your daily commitment to young artists and writers. With your help, we look forward to recognizing our the DC area’s most creative teenagers through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

Who Enters

Nearly 200,000 students will accept the challenge to go beyond the classroom assignment, creating daring and innovative works. They will submit their best pieces for review by panels of art and writing professionals, and compete for recognition, scholarships, and publication opportunities. Entering this competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to focus their creative energy and to make their voices heard.

Since 1923, more than 13 million of America’s most talented teens have participated in the Awards. 2.5 million students have been recognized through exhibitions and publications and have shared in more than $25 million in cash awards and college scholarships.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has a long list of distinguished alumni that includes Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Sue Miller, Richard Avedon, Zac Posen, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Otterness, Sylvia Plath, John Lithgow, Ned Vizzini, Abdi Farah (winner of the reality show Work of Art: The Next Great Artist), and John Baldessari, who will accept this year’s Alumni Achievement Award at a Carnegie Hall Ceremony in May of 2011.

Scholastic Writing Awards

Many Writopia Lab writers from across the country enjoy submitting their works each year to the Scholastic Writing Awards, the nation’s most prestigious and longest-running writing competition for teens (grades 7 to 12). Whether or not awards are won, the deadlines and guidelines inspire our entire community to write at our highest level and, most importantly, to complete pieces.

We are happy to report that over the last three years, more Writopia writers have won regional and national Scholastic awards than any other group of kids in the country!

In the New York region, Writopia Lab has, since 2008, served as an outreach partner to the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers (the organization that runs the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards), publicizing the Scholastic Writing Awards, running free workshops to help young writers submit their work, and working one-on-one with students who are motivated to put extra effort into polishing their pieces.

If you live in any other region, please contact our national office at (212) 222-4088 for help submitting your work.
