Please Help Send Two Deserving Writers to Sleepaway Camp

This would be a life-changing opportunity for these teens from Homes for the Homeless to be included in WriCampia. We hope to extend two full scholarships, and we are trying to raise $4,000 from our community to help with this initiative. Any contribution, big or small, is greatly appreciated.

A Message from Our Staff Community

Writopia Lab’s full-time and part-time instructors have been working with Homes for the Homeless (H4H) in New York City for four years. We have brought our program to hundreds of kids and teens in the H4H shelters during difficult and transitional times in their young lives. The impact these writers have had on us is beyond measure. We are inspired to help these vulnerable kids and teens celebrate their imaginations and discover and express themselves through reflective writings, poetry, scripts, prose, and art. We are always looking to expand and continue our connections with these young writers.

We have already selected two teens we met at the Saratoga Family Inn in Queens. They would love to come to WriCampia, the sleepaway camp Writopia runs at the end of August. The teens have been dedicated to writing through Writopia Creative Writing workshops at Saratoga since the summer of 2014. Through the years, we’ve had the pleasure to watch them grow, find their voice, and share their unique perspectives. One of the writers has aged out of programming at Saratoga, and she still travels almost two hours every other week to participate in this year’s workshop as an intern -- inspiring the newer writers with her dedication to her craft. She recently completed a short collection of poems, which will be included in Writopia’s 10th Anniversary Anthology, A Decade of Shared Stories. The other teen writer is included in this publication with a graphic novel. He has been interested in surrealism, citing Salvador Dali as one of his favorite artists, and finding ways to incorporate surrealism in his current graphic noveling project. These young writers are leaders in their workshop, always eager to play Writopia writing games, continue their projects, work on their projects outside of workshop, and encourage other writers to do the same.

This would be a life-changing opportunity for these teens, and including them in WriCampia would mean the world to us. We are currently raising funds within our broader staff community to sponsor at least one of these writers at camp; we are hoping that donors at our upcoming benefit will match our donations so that both writers can come to camp with us.

If for any reason these two writers cannot attend camp, the funds will be applied to other teens from H4H or to other deserving financial aid candidates. Thank you for supporting our internal fundraising endeavor so that these two deserving writers may benefit from the transformative nature of a literary sleepaway program!

Also, everyone who donates will be automatically entered in a raffle to win two tickets to the Broadway show, Significant Other, with a possibility of backstage passes, courtesy of Writopia Board Member Kim Hartman.
