Writopia is well known for its community of enthusiastic writers. But we have a growing number of families who have enrolled with the hope that a reluctant or hesitant writer would blossom here. Another concern we often hear is: “My child has great ideas, but has a tough time organizing these thoughts into coherent stories.” These young people also find a home at Writopia Lab--so much of what we do is help young people navigate the rocky waters between idea and story.
Below is some of the feedback we have received from parents of reluctant, hesitant, and, occasionally, intimidated writers:
-------------------------- “I just wanted to take a moment to thank you again for all of your amazing work with our 10-year-old daughter at the beginning of the summer. I was blown away with how quickly you were able to bring her around from resistance to excitement and enjoyment. I wasn't even sure she would stay for the first day, and in the end she absolutely loved it. I also appreciate how you understood her mechanical vs creativity issues immediately. She had an amazing week, and I really appreciate all of your efforts and the fabulous expertise and attitudes of all of the people at Writopia. She will be back for a week at the end of the summer.” --Deborah K.
---------------------------------- “My teenage son was surprised that I signed him up for something like this... But he has been unbelievably excited about it since it began, and has been working on his piece at home. Jeremy at Writopia had said that even kids who are reluctant really end up loving it, and he didn't steer me wrong!" -- Hillary K.
------------------------------------ “Our 9-year-old son just completed his fifth Writopia workshop. He was always a reluctant writer but after a year at Writopia, he enjoys it now. I give the entire credit to Writopia…and below is a direct quote from him (which he insisted on writing himself)! ‘With Writopia I think that I have gotten much better at writing stories. Now it's more fun and before it wasn't as fun. I don't know why it's more fun, I just enjoy it. Maybe it's because there are kids with me to share my ideas with. It's also more fun because we play writing games and exercises. The teachers make it more fun by giving more feedback and it helps me build onto my story.’” -- JKA
--------------------------------------- “We firmly believe that participation in Writopia over the last year has had a positive impact on her confidence as a writer and her willingness to trust herself as a writer, with wonderful results. Thank you.” -- Yanos Family --Alex Yanos
-------------------------------------- “My youngest daughter was adamant about not liking to write before attending Writopia this year. Now she is more comfortable with writing and also more comfortable with sharing her writing. Thank you!” --Flavia G.

"My kids loved their musical theater experience! They have been singing improv songs ever since. Stella (8) was already a very enthusiastic story teller, Jasper (6) less so, but he really responded to your program. I loved their performance. Thank you, you are doing a marvelous job and I'm so glad I have found you."
