Workshops in Westchester and Fairfield
Writopia Lab is a creative writing program for children between the ages 8 and 18. Our workshops are grouped by age and never have more than six students. All of our instructors are published writers who have been extensively trained in the Writopia Lab workshopping method.
Students will complete at least one polished piece of writing (often short fiction) in each workshop, whether they enroll in a weekly workshop or a five-day intensive. Workshops and intensives focus on making writing fun for kids and teens, which in turn fosters the discipline and craft required for excellent written expression. Our students learn grammar and word choice through practical application, not rote. They acquire confidence and sociability through peer review and through public readings of their own work.
We invite Writopians to showcase their work by reading their own completed pieces of memoir, fiction, or poetry at a local venue. Join our mailing list to receive updates on future events, which are often open to the public.
Private group workshops are also offered—we work with your schedule and your location. This option is perfect for groups of 3-6 friends.
Private sessions are available for students wishing to hone craft and/or to prepare for college.
Workshop Schedule
After-school and weekend workshops meet for an hour and a half, once a week, during the school year. Private one-on-one sessions typically meet for an hour, once a week, but your schedule can vary as needed.
Summer and holiday five-day intensive workshops meet Monday through Friday all summer long and during all school breaks.
Each of the summer workshops listed below has space remaining. If you don't see a workshop that fits your schedule, don't despair. Let us know and we'll open an additional session in either Katonah or Larchmont.
Winter 2011/2012 Weekly Workshops
Our winter semester continues through March. Missed workshops can be made up on any day of the week on which an age-appropriate workshop meets. (Students may only make up missed sessions during the semester in which they are enrolled.) Workshops meet for 10 sessions, and the fee for these ten sessions is $425. Students who anticipate being unable to attend one or two classes may prorate the remainder of the semester.
If you don't see a workshop that fits your schedule, let us know and we'll try to open an additional class.

Léna has been teaching Writopia Lab workshops in Manhattan since 2009, and began developing Writopia Westchester in the spring of 2010. Léna's first Young Adult novel, Edges , was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in December, 2010. Her inspiration and touchstone is her late grandmother, author Madeleine L'Engle , who was able to transform the solitary nature of writing into a sacred sense of community where her art and the art of others could flourish.

Jordana Frankel is so excited to join Writopia! Her debut young adult novel, THE WARD, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in 2013. She received her B.A. from Goucher College in Maryland where, as the recipient of the Kratz Creative Writing Fellowship, she studied the art of storytelling within indigenous cultures. After graduating, she spent a year in Italy studying to be an artiste, but instead acquired a deep knowledge of pasta, and returned home to follow her true love: words. She then received her M.F.A. in creative writing with a focus on poetry from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Jordana has worked in the publishing industry for the last few years, but now devotes herself full-time to her writing.
