Workshops in Westchester and Fairfield Counties
Writopia Lab is a creative writing program for children between the ages 8 and 18. Our workshops are grouped by age and never have more than six students. All of our instructors are published writers who have been extensively trained in the Writopia Lab workshopping method.
Students will complete at least one polished piece of writing (often short fiction) in each workshop, whether they enroll in a weekly workshop or a five-day intensive. Workshops and intensives focus on making writing fun for kids and teens, which in turn fosters the discipline and craft required for excellent written expression. Our students learn grammar and word choice through practical application, not rote. They acquire confidence and sociability through peer review and through public readings of their own work.
We invite Writopians to showcase their work by reading their own completed pieces of memoir, fiction, or poetry at a local venue. Join our mailing list to receive updates on future events, which are often open to the public.
Private group workshops are also offered—we work with your schedule and your location. This option is perfect for groups of 3-6 friends.
Private sessions are available for students wishing to hone craft and/or to prepare for college.
Workshop Schedule
After-school and weekend workshops meet for an hour and a half, once a week, during the school year. Private one-on-one sessions typically meet for an hour, once a week, but your schedule can vary as needed.
Summer and holiday five-day intensive workshops meet Monday through Friday all summer long and during all school breaks.
If you don't see a workshop that fits your schedule, let us know and we'll try to open a new one!.
Summer 2012 Half-Day Workshops
During our summer semester in Westchester and Fairfield Counties, each five-day workshop meets three hours per day over five straight days, packing the same punch as a semester of afterschool workshops. Workshops are peppered with fun, friendship, and productive games. Teens usually focus on completing one piece over the week; our younger writers sometimes write several shorter stories.
The fee for a five-day workshops is $425. If you don’t see an age and time combination which works for your family, please

Léna began teaching Writopia Lab workshops in Manhattan in 2009, then went on to develop the program in NYC's northern suburbs in 2010. That same year, her first Young Adult novel,EDGES, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Léna earned her BA from Barnard, studying English and Italian literature, and her MA in Drama Therapy from NYU. Mentoring has long been the connective tissue in Léna's life, whether through her work with at-risk adolescents in Utah, California, and New York; or through her own writing discipline, as fostered by her late grandmother, author Madeleine L'Engle. It was her grandmother who taught Léna to transform the solitary nature of writing into a sacred sense of community, where her art and the art of others can flourish.

Jordana Frankel is so excited to join Writopia! Her debut young adult novel, THE WARD, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in 2013. She received her B.A. from Goucher College in Maryland where, as the recipient of the Kratz Creative Writing Fellowship, she studied the art of storytelling within indigenous cultures. After graduating, she spent a year in Italy studying to be an artiste, but instead acquired a deep knowledge of pasta, and returned home to follow her true love: words. She then received her M.F.A. in creative writing with a focus on poetry from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. Jordana has worked in the publishing industry for the last few years, but now devotes herself full-time to her writing.
