Come celebrate and support Writopia at Youth INC's 2018 Celebration to Benefit New York Kids! Youth INC uses venture philanthropy to empower NYC-based youth-centered nonprofits like Writopia to build and achieve long-term sustainability. This will help Writopia provide continuous, ongoing support to over 1,000 low-income students in NYC each year, on a weekly basis and throughout the summer in our in-school and after school workshops, in one-on-one sessions, and at our day camps and sleepaway camps.

The Mission of the Teen Writers’ Summit is to curate a diverse platform for teens to assess and advocate their writing by engaging the journalism, collegiate, and literary landscapes. The Summit will include panel discussions, a college/book fair, and a college essay review station.

With the help of our teen leaders, we have curated hour-long panel discussions featuring Scholastic Art & Writing representatives, PEN America representatives, directors of undergraduate creative writing programs, literary magazine and book editors, literary agents, and established authors, journalists, playwrights and comedians.

At Writopia, outdoor writing is designed to get writers observing their surroundings, exploring their city, and celebrating sensory details, and we want you to experience it with us! Join us in various locations all over Los Angeles and write in nature, become acquainted with Writopia, and meet other young writers and writerly families in your community.

We will provide a writing prompt, notebooks and pens, a Writopia t-shirt, a sharing circle, and plenty of time for sharing, feedback, and questions about Writopia! All of this for $30 per family.

In the morning, writers will travel to Silver Rock Farm for a horseback riding lesson and animal care adventures in Pearl River, NY. They will eat lunch at the farm, then return to Writopia’s Upper West Side lab for a writing workshop. Please register here and make payment here.

San Francisco Bay Area Teen Writing Awards 2018 Award Ceremony

Join us to help honor the Award Recipients and Finalists at the The Bay Area Teen Writing Awards Ceremony, which will be hosted at Mission Workshop (541 Valencia St, San Francisco) from 5 to 6 PM on Saturday, October 20th as part of Litquake’s finale event, The Lit Crawl. Come be inspired by Shanthi Sekaran, our lauded keynote speaker, and hear the nine award recipients read their pieces.

The names of the award recipients and finalists are listed below alphabetically by first name. If your name is below you will receive another email with details about the event. Thank you to all who submitted! Keep writing!

Writopia Lab, in partnership with Litquake, invited writers between the ages of 12 to 18 to submit their fiction, memoir, or poetry for a chance to receive an award of recognition. Each award recipient will have the opportunity to be published in Writopia Lab's teen litmag The Ellipsis and to participate in a celebratory reading at Litquake’s culminating event, the Lit Crawl. The finalists will be published in The Ellipsis and be honored with a certificate at the Lit Crawl.

A broad range of voices, styles, and perspectives has beenchosen to be showcased at Lit Crawl, Litquake’s final festive night in the Mission District of San Francisco on Saturday, October 20th. Additionally, two outstanding submissions by 11th and 12th grade writers have been selected to receive a $250 scholarship.

NYC Youth Poetry Festival 2018

This summer, Writopia is partnering with the Poetry Society of New York to host the 2018 Youth Poetry Festival on July 28th and 29th from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Join us on Governors Island for free Teen Poetry Workshops, staged readings, an island-wide scavenger hunt, and more! For teens ages 13+ interested in attending the one-day (either Saturday or Sunday) poetry workshops, please register here. The all-ages scavenger hunt does not require registration.

  • For Teens ages 13+: Register for a one-day (either Saturday or Sunday) poetry workshop taught by a published poet. Participants will meet in age-based groups to write and revise original poetry, and explore the island on a poetry hike. Each day will culminate in a staged reading for family and friends. Participants must bring their own lunch.
    • 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM: Workshop 1 - Creating content
    • 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM: Lunch break
    • 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM: Poetry hike around the island
    • 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Workshop 2 - Revision and performance techniques
    • 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM: Staged reading
  • For All: Island-wide scavenger hunt. Read, write, and find poetry (at your own pace) throughout the island and make your way to Colonels Row where participants can add a line or two to the 2018 Youth Poetry Festival collaborative poem. Participants can also sign up to read their original writing at our staged readings taking place at 4:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday.

Longtime Writopia instructor Léna Roy and her sister Charlotte Jones Voiklis (also a Writopia mom) will be reading from their middle grade biography of Madeleine L'Engle: Becoming Madeleine: A Biography of the Author of A Wrinkle in Time by Her Granddaughters. They will also be discussing the writing and publishing process.
