Writopia Lab’s 11th Annual

Worldwide Plays Festival

Founded in 2010, Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival is an annual Off-Broadway festival of one-act plays written by playwrights ages 6 to 18 and produced, designed, directed, and acted by New York theater professionals.

Thanks to the support of generous donors, Writopia Lab's Worldwide Plays Festival is now in its 11th season and is open to more writers than ever before.

The festival includes plays written in workshops at Writopia’s labs across the country and plays submitted to our competition from playwrights around the world! Comedies, musicals, monologues, historical dramas, tear-jerkers, and thought pieces — all written by the talented young playwrights of tomorrow.

This season, we will be releasing these 40 produced plays as a podcast rather than live performances. Podcasts will be recorded in separate video chat sessions with the actors, director, and writer present. The festival includes plays written in workshops at Writopia’s labs across the country and plays submitted to our competition from playwrights around the world! Comedies, musicals, monologues, historical dramas, tear-jerkers, and thought pieces — all written by the talented young playwrights of tomorrow.

Worldwide Plays Festival 2020

This Year’s Theme:

Heroes and Monsters: PLAYS AGAINST FEAR

Now in our 11th season of the Writopia Lab Worldwide Plays Festival, we challenge our playwrights to write towards the monsters — be they internal, external, systemic, real, or imaginary — and vanquish them. A monster can be a voice inside your head that tells you something negative about yourself, the bully at school, a negative feeling that pervades the air inside your home or neighborhood, the politician on TV, the pollution in the water, or a made-up creature causing havoc. In these 9 minute plays, we also want to challenge our playwrights to understand the monsters as well as the heroes, unpacking the fear that creeps at the edges. What does this ‘monster’ really want, and why? What do I learn by trying to understand them?
